Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has one of the sharpest offensive minds in the NFL.

He’s great at scheming plays and getting guys open, and the team’s offensive concepts are usually sound. However, that doesn’t mean he should continue to call plays for this team.

He’s been way too conservative and eager to establish the run, even though his team has struggled to run-block all year long. More than that, he’s holding QB Jordan Love back in the midst of a potential MVP-caliber season.

Matt LaFleur’s play-calling is Packers’ biggest issue

As pointed out by analyst Nathan Marzion, LaFleur has moved on from what worked for him earlier in the season. He has Love constantly throwing behind the sticks, even though he’s an elite deep passer.

“25% of Jordan Love’s pass attempts over the last 6 games have been behind the line of scrimmage, 2nd highest behind only Kyler Murray,” Marzion wrote. “Only 13% of his pass attempts in that span have been in the intermediate area (10-19 yards), which is the 3rd lowest.”

NFL analyst Tyler Brooke also took notice of that trend, and he took to social media to explain how that approach is a disservice to Love’s skills.

“Jordan Love has a 151.3 passer rating on throws 10-19 yards downfield,” Brooke added. “And the offense just refuses to cater towards this right now despite having an abundance of weapons to throw to.”

Love does have a history of erratic throws and wild decision-making, but given the Packers’ plethora of pass-catchers and his talent as a pocket passer, they just have to trust him. Through eight games, Love is up to 2,071 passing yards on a 70.8 percent completion percentage, adding 13 touchdowns to just three picks.

The Packers have a worrisome tendency to play down to their opposition’s level. If LaFleur wants to keep his job at the end of the season, he might want to give up play-calling duties.
