The White Sox announced Tuesday that they’ve hired Zach Bove as their new pitching coach.
The organization also announced that Matt Wise will return for his third season as bullpen coach. Bove takes over for Ethan Katz, who didn’t have his contract renewed by the organization.
Bove spent the past three seasons as an assistant pitching coach with the Royals. Before joining the Royals, Bove spent the 2019-22 seasons with the Twins as a minor league assistant pitching coordinator, special projects coordinator and pitching coach in the Gulf Coast League.
The Royals finished sixth in the majors in staff ERA (3.73). Bove has his work cut out for him with the Sox’ pitching staff. The Sox finished 20th in ERA (4.28), 24th in strikeout rate (21%) and 29th in walk rate allowed (9.7%).
General manager Chris Getz has said that defense and pitching are core tenets of his vision for the organization going forward, so getting the pitching coach hire correct for manager Will Venable’s staff was very important this offseason.
