While the Kansas City Chiefs won’t officially play a game for nearly two full weeks, they’re getting some very good news heading into a week off. Left tackle Josh Simmons has reported back to the team, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, after missing several games due to a personal matter.
The Chiefs have been missing Simmons since he was added as a last-minute, pre-game adjustment to the team’s injury report before facing the Detroit Lions in Week 6. If Simmons is back and ready to resume his starting duties, he will have missed four total games.
Simmons was first scratched in Week 6 at the last minute, although no details were made known at the time—just that the team’s first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft was in California and not Arrowhead Stadium in order to attend to some personal business. From there, the Chiefs made it clear that they would not discuss any details or take questions related to Simmons’ absence.
Over the last month, head coach Andy Reid has given slight updates on Simmons, saying the team has remained in touch with him and that things were trending in a positive direction. Then came Nate Taylor’s report from ESPN two weeks ago saying that Simmons was expected back with the team in a matter of weeks.
The timing is perfect for Simmons’ return after missing four games for the Chiefs.
With Simmons away, the Chiefs turned to Jaylon Moore at left tackle and the results have been surprising. While the team is coming off of a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills, a game in which the entire offense (line included) struggled for 60 minutes, Moore’s efforts were impressive after stepping in at the last minute.
On Sunday, the offensive line reached a boiling point for the Chiefs, so Simmons’ timing is ideal going forward. Jawaan Taylor is dealing with an ankle injury that will be important to monitor going forward, although the bye week might give him enough time to heal for Week 11’s game against the Denver Broncos. Trey Smith is also dealing with back spasms that kept him out of Week 8 entirely against the Washington Commanders and limited in practice coming into Week 9.
The Chiefs selected Simmons at No. 32 overall in this year’s draft and immediately slotted him in as their starting left tackle. Simmons’ ability to man the role from day one has been revelatory for an offense that rotated through four different starters in 2024. If Moore can slot back into a swing tackle role, the Chiefs offensive front could stabilize at an ideal time, given that the current playoff structure would have K.C. on the outside looking in as the No. 8 seed in the AFC.
