Mary Jane (Van Duyse) Sorgel. Submitted.
The Door County Museum will celebrate the legacy of Mary Jane (Van Duyse) Sorgel and the iconic Green Bay Packers’ cheerleading squad, the Golden Girls, April 24-26.
The event will kick off with a reception with themed refreshments on April 24, 11 am – 2 pm.
Sorgel, a Sturgeon Bay native, made history as a dance instructor, world champion baton twirler and founder of the Golden Girls. Her passion for dance and the Packers led to the creation of the cheerleading squad, which became a cornerstone of Packers tradition.
Timed to coincide with the 2025 National Football League (NFL) Draft in Green Bay, the event will feature an exclusive exhibit of some of Sorgel’s personal memorabilia, along with videos highlighting her journey. Former Golden Girls will be present to share stories and chat with Packers fans, and the museum will be decked out in green and gold to set the mood.
The museum, located at 18 N. 4th Ave. in Sturgeon Bay, will be open 10 am – 4:30 pm on April 24 through 26. Admission is free.
