Chiefs Fans Demand Surprise Coach Gets Fired

Chiefs fans are seemingly fed up with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, demanding his firing after Sunday’s disappointing loss to the Bills.

Obviously, the offense hasn’t met expectations following consecutive Super Bowl wins, though these are the types of champagne problems that often plague championship teams. Kansas City is far from a perfect roster, though these humorous overreactions still provide fodder for fans to discuss.

The Chiefs rank 20th in the NFL in yards per play (5.2). Whether fair or not, fans have put the blame on Nagy’s shoulders.

Early in Patrick Mahomes’ career, with Eric Bieniemy serving as the offensive coordinator, the Chiefs routinely ranked at the top of the NFL in most offensive categories.

Since Nagy took over, the statistical output has cratered. Kansas City still won each of the last two Super Bowls and put up plenty of points in the playoffs, so they’re clearly capable of turning things on when necessary. It’s impossible to know based on the information we have if Nagy is actually a net negative for the offense, but fans are still upset.

Questionable play-calling has plagued the team in the red zone over the last handful of years. Perhaps it’s Nagy’s fault, perhaps it’s Andy Reid’s, perhaps it’s a combination of many factors. The Chiefs’ wide receivers have been below average at best since Bieniemy left, likely playing a large role as well.

Most importantly, Reid and Mahomes trust Nagy. He’s built up fantastic relationships and isn’t going anywhere barring another head coaching opportunity. Fans need to get used to this style of offense until major roster changes are made, and always remember, the Chiefs are still winning games.

There’s a lot for the offense to correct but as they’ve consistently proven, this organization deserves the benefit of the doubt.
