San Francisco, CA – In a surprising “coming home” move, the San Francisco 49ers have added a familiar talent to their roster to bolster their strength on the edge – an area where the team is facing significant challenges due to injuries. Former No. 4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell has officially signed with the Niners’ practice squad, according to reliable NFL sources.
Although known for his role as a defensive end (DE) – or loosely called a “defensive edge player” by some fans – Ferrell brings the necessary depth to the 49ers’ defensive edge. This 28-year-old was a key part of the 2023 roster, starting 17 games and recording 3.5 sacks, contributing to the Niners’ deep run to the Super Bowl.
Ferrell’s “Homecoming” Journey
Clelin Ferrell was selected No. 4 overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2019 NFL Draft, with expectations to become a top defensive star. However, his career with the Raiders didn’t go as smoothly as anticipated, leading to his release as a free agent in 2023.
That’s when Ferrell found his “second home” in San Francisco.
In the 2023 season – his first in red and gold – Ferrell quickly integrated and became a pillar on the defensive edge. He played in all 17 games, with 3.5 quarterback takedowns, proving his value in the flexible defensive system under DC DeMeco Ryans (now with Houston). Though not “monster” stats, Ferrell’s stability and relentless pressure helped the Niners maintain edge strength, where stars like Nick Bosa often need support.
After that season, Ferrell continued his journeyman journey. He signed a short-term contract with the Washington Commanders in the 2024 season, where he once again recorded 3.5 sacks. Most recently, he was on the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad but only appeared in one game before being released.
Now, with the invitation from the 49ers, Ferrell seems to have found the ideal place to “come home.”
Strategic Moves Amid the Injury Storm
Signing Ferrell is no coincidence. The 49ers are grappling with serious injuries on the defensive edge: Nick Bosa is out long-term with a torn ACL, while Bryce Huff is dealing with a hamstring issue. These gaps have forced HC Kyle Shanahan and the front office to act quickly to avoid a mid-season collapse.
In the past 24 hours, the Niners have executed a series of smart moves. On Tuesday, they traded with the New England Patriots to acquire Keion White – a young, promising edge rusher – along with a 2026 seventh-round pick, in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Next, Ferrell was added to the practice squad, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Schultz posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Source: 49ers bolstering edge rush capabilities, as they are signing DE Clelin Ferrell to their practice squad. The former No. 4 overall pick started 17 games for the 49ers in 2023, when he had 3.5 sacks. San Francisco adds Ferrell and Keion White today.”
Additionally, the 49ers signed Trevis Gipson from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad, adding another layer of insurance at the DE position. These moves not only address short-term needs but also demonstrate GM John Lynch’s long-term strategy: leveraging familiar experience to build roster depth.
Expectations for Ferrell and the Niners
For Ferrell, the big question is whether he can overcome the “curse” of high draft expectations. In San Francisco, where the defensive scheme emphasizes team coordination, Ferrell has a chance to shine without overwhelming individual pressure. If he can maintain his 2023 form, promotion to the active roster is just a matter of time.
For the 49ers, these additions could be the key to maintaining their championship contender status. With Brock Purdy leading the offense and a reinforced defense, the Niners are sending a clear message: They’re not ready to give up in the 2025 season.
Ferrell has “come home,” and Levi’s Stadium fans are eagerly awaiting to see if he can continue his fairy tale story. Stay tuned for updates from upcoming practices!
