Drake Maye’s breakout season reached new heights Sunday, but amid the cheers raining down from Foxborough, the Patriots quarterback insists he missed the crowd’s loudest chant. As fans roared “M-V-P” after his game-clinching touchdown pass against Cleveland, Maye said he was too distracted by his teammates teasing him.
The second-year quarterback led New England to a commanding 32-13 win over the Browns, further strengthening his path in the MVP race. His performance, three touchdowns, 289 passing yards and a perfect second half, sent Patriots fans into a frenzy as chants echoed around Gillette Stadium.

Yet Maye, laughing afterward, said he didn’t hear them because teammates were giving him a hard time about his clumsy slide on a 28-yard run moments before the touchdown. Head coach Mike Vrabel joined in the fun, joking postgame that he might need to send Maye to spring training to learn how to slide properly.
It was the only blemish on what was otherwise a near-flawless outing against the NFL’s top-ranked defense. Once considered a project, Maye has quickly evolved into one of the league’s most efficient passers, completing over 75 percent of his throws this season.
Drake Maye Reveals Reason Why He Didn’t Hear MVP Chants During New England Patriots Game

Maye faced the press after his game against the Browns and revealed why he didn’t hear the MVP chants. This can be seen in a video shared by the league’s official Instagram account.
In the second half against Cleveland, he completed every pass he attempted, carving up a defense led by All-Pro rusher Myles Garrett. Patriots fans responded by serenading him with the first MVP chants heard in Foxborough since Tom Brady’s heyday. The energy inside the stadium reflected renewed confidence in a team that has now won five straight games and reclaimed first place in the AFC East.

Maye kept the praise in perspective, crediting his teammates and the fans who remained loyal through the team’s recent lean years. The chants may have escaped him in the moment, but his flawless play ensured the message came through loud and clear, which is New England finally has its next star quarterback.
