FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Russ Francis, the former standout tight end who spent seven seasons with the New England Patriots and later won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, tragically died in a plane crash on Monday, according to authorities in Lake Placid, New York.
Francis— a three-time Pro Bowl selection with New England— was departing from an upstate New York airport with a fellow aviation enthusiast when their single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff. He was 70 years old.
Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft released a statement on Francis’ tragic passing, saying that “On behalf of the entire New England Patriots organization, we extend our sincerest sympathies to the family of Russ Francis, who tragically passed away…”
“Russ was a fan favorite throughout his playing career. He was a dynamic player on the field who had an even bigger personality off it. He knew no boundaries, pushed the limits and lived his life to the fullest. Our thoughts are with Russ’s family, friends, teammates and the many Patriots fans who mourn his loss.”
The 49ers organization also extended their sympathies to Francis’ family, saying that “The San Francisco 49ers are saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former tight end and Super Bowl XIX champion Russ Francis. We send our deepest condolences to the Francis family during this difficult time.”
Francis’ brother also shared a message with the public, writing ”My older brother Russ Francis was just killed in a plane crash in Lake Placid, New York. Needless to say, my family and I are completely flattened. Flying was my brother’s lifelong passion, and perhaps a fitting way for him to go. God speed to you my big brother!!”
The University of Oregon alum played 13 seasons in the NFL, finishing with 393 receptions for 5,262 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was also a two-time All-Pro, adding to his already impressive list of accolades.
