Is Maye a top-5 NFL QB right now?

Maye now has 12 passing touchdowns to just two interceptions in 2025. He’s thrown for 1,744 yards at a completion clip of 75.2. He has a 77.2 QBR and a 116.4 passer rating. Are you not entertained?
It’s not even that controversial to call Drake Maye a top 5 quarterback right now. Certainly not among those currently playing.
1. Mahomes
2. Mayfield
3. Allen
4. Maye
5. DakLamar, Daniels, Burrow when healthy. Darnold, Goff & Daniel Jones also in the mix.

The season is still young, and Maye hasn’t been playing at his current level for more than a month. There will be plenty of overreactions about Maye’s excellence this week. At the end of the day, his sample size is still way too small for Maye to be considered on the level of a guy like Josh Allen, or even Baker Mayfield, who has made two consecutive Pro Bowls.
Even so, there is something to be said about who is playing the best football in the immediate present, and very few NFL QBs — if any — are throwing the football better than Maye right now. His efficiency is astounding for his age, and his fearless mindset combined with his arm strength and accuracy have already made him an elite deep threat far sooner than anyone assumed, even the staunchest of Maye supporters.

The only thing left for Maye to do is stay consistent, which is easier said than done. New England doesn’t have a robust upcoming schedule, but each week will be a potential trap game.
For the next 24 hours or so, it’s worth sitting back and appreciating that Maye has legitimately exceeded expectations at this point in his career, even for a No. 3 overall pick.
