Former Packers Defensive End Signs With 49ers Days Ahead Of Week 12 Matchup

The Green Bay Packers face a difficult task on Sunday, taking on the San Francisco 49ers. While the 7-3 Packers hold a two-game edge over the 5-5 San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Playoff picture, time is running out on the 2024 season. San Francisco is also just one game behind the 6-4 Arizona Cardinals for first place in the NFC West, which boasts three 5-5 teams.

In other words, both teams have a great deal to play for and are very much in the early hunt for a spot in the NFC Playoffs. While this is not a “must win” for either team at this point, seeding possibilities could end up being affected by the outcome.

Former Green Bay Packers Defensive Lineman Jonathan Garvin Signed with the San Francisco 49ers

Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark (97) celebrates his key sack of Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields (1) on third down with Green Bay Packers linebacker Jonathan Garvin (53) late in the fourth quarter of their game Sunday, October 17m 2021 at Solider Field in Chicago, Ill. The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 24-14.

Green Bay is relatively healthy after their most recent game, a victory over the Chicago Bears, in Week 11. Jaire Alexander did not practice on Wednesday, and neither did running back Marshawn Lloyd. Everyone else, however, participated.

The same cannot be said for San Francisco, who is dealing with a plethora of injuries to key players. All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa, for example, is dealing with an oblique injury that kept him out of practice. Quarterback Brock Purdy, too, is dealing with a shoulder injury.

Of course, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season after tearing his ACL early in the year.

With so many players injured, the 49ers signed a familiar face for their upcoming game against the Packers: Jonathan Garvin.

Garvin was originally drafted by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, but did not have a big role on either defense or special teams.

However, he played in 16 games in 2021 and recorded 1.5 sacks. In 2022, he played in 14 games for Green Bay and defended two passes.

The Packers, though, cut ties with Garvin when they trimmed their roster to 53 ahead of the 2023 season.

After going unsigned in 2023, Garvin signed to play for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL in 2024. However, his contract with them was terminated when he agreed to sign with the 49ers’ in early August.

Garvin spent some time on San Francisco’s practice squad this earlier this season, but was never promoted for a game. They last released him on October 24.

“Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb on Micah Parsons being traded: “Obviously wishing him the best. I hope he has the best season ever. He’s Micah Parsons, he’s unblockable. He’s unstoppable.” What’s it going to be like when he comes to town in Week 4? “The worst. It’s gonna be weird. It’s gonna be conflicting. I hope he is not in the backfield in two seconds.”
