Chiefs Cut Recent Draft Pick to Make Room for New Addition in Week 12

After their first regular season loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs made a notable addition to their roster.

On Monday, the Chiefs signed former New England Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton to the practice squad. The Pats surprisingly waived Thornton last week after barely playing this season.

The Chiefs will try to re-ignite Thornton’s football career, which has struggled to take off after being taken in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. With the former Baylor standout joining the back-to-back Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs had to part ways with one of their recent draft picks.

According to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, Kansas City released wide receiver Cornell Powell from the taxi squad to make room for Thornton.

The Chiefs took the 27-year-old wide receiver in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Powell had a solid five-year collegiate career at Clemson, capped off by a tremendous 2020 season, with 53 receptions for 882 yards and seven touchdowns.

Powell couldn’t carry that success into the pros, playing in three NFL games during the 2022 season. The former fifth-round pick had done a solid job keeping a spot on the practice squad over the last few years.

However, Powell was waived ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown deadline in late August and wasn’t re-signed to the practice squad until Oct. 22. That said, it will be interesting to see if the former fifth-round pick can find another opportunity or if he’ll make it back to Kansas City in the near future.
