The Tennessee Titans were the first team to fire their head coach in the new season, and the Kansas City Chiefs have been immediately connected to the opening. That should come as no surprise given the person making the decisions about the organization’s future.
Former Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi was hired to be the general manager of the Titans last winter, and in the process, he inherited Brian Callahan, who was just one year into his stint as Tennessee’s head coach. Callahan was brought in after years of leading a high-octane offense for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Given the Titans abysmal start in 2025, and reports of player frustration, Callahan was given the boot on Monday, shortly after another Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Matt Nagy has surfaced as a name to watch for the Titans head coach opening.
The Titans have hired former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Mike McCoy as their interim leader, but Borgonzi will be keen to name his own captain at some point this winter. And a name associated with the Chiefs has already been floated.
NFL reporter Ian Rapoport named Chiefs offensive coordinator and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as early candidates to watch for the job. He also acknowledges “many others” who will also draw the Titans’ interest.
Nagy has head coaching experience himself after four seasons leading the Chicago Bears. However, his tenure lasted only four seasons due to declining results. In Nagy’s first year in Chicago, in 2018, the Bears finished first in the NFC North with a 12-4 record, but he never had another winning record. After two 8-8 seasons, the Bears fired him after going 6-11.
The Chiefs brought Nagy back in 2022 for a second run with the team, and he now serves as their offensive coordinator, replacing Eric Bieniemy. Nagy was previously in the same role before being hired away by the Bears.
While it makes sense to assume Nagy could be a name to watch, it would be a bit surprising for Chiefs fans knowing just how much the offense struggled in recent seasons. Despite being a Super Bowl winning team, the offensive results with Nagy have been middling (and even frustrating). That’s not all on Nagy, since much of that was due to personnel issues, but Nagy getting a head coaching gig would be a shock all the same.
Then again, perhaps Borgonzi feels good about Nagy after having spent several years with him in the Chiefs organization.
