Injury updates on Lukas Van Ness, Zach Tom after Packers beat Bengals

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur provided updates on a few key players coming out of Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals, including new information on defensive end Lukas Van Ness, right tackle Zach Tom and defensive back Javon Bullard.

Van Ness injured his foot while sacking Joe Flacco in the second half and was eventually carted back to the locker room. He had an MRI on Monday and the Packers got good news in terms of avoiding a long-term injury, but his return timetable is still TBD.

“We definitely avoided something serious, but how long he’ll be out remains to be seen,” LaFleur said Monday.

LaFleur said Van Ness has been playing a physical brand of football and any potential absence in the coming weeks would “definitely” be a loss for the defense.

LaFleur didn’t know if Tom, who is still playing through an oblique injury, suffered a setback on Sunday.

“I thought he battled and I thought played extremely hard. It was nice to have him back out there,” LaFleur said.

Tom played all 61 snaps on Sunday after missing the majority of the last three games. He originally suffered the oblique injury in Week 1, and it was clear, based on post-game comments, that the injury is still hurting.

LaFleur said Bullard, who was evaluated for a concussion after hitting helmets with a player in the second half, is not in the concussion protocol and is dealing with something closer to a stinger. LaFleur said Bullard told him “he’s fine” and there was a major sense of “relief” considering the second-year defensive back suffered a concussion in Week 3.

LaFleur said he didn’t know running back Josh Jacobs was sick until after he produced 150 yards and scored two touchdowns on Sunday. Jacobs said post-game that he woke up Sunday not feeling 100 percent, and he admitted he vomited during the game.

“It was his flu game,” LaFleur said.

The Packers will release the first injury report of Week 7 on Wednesday afternoon.
