Phillies add three prospects to their 40-man roster

With the deadline happening today for the team to add players to their 40-man roster lest they be exposed for 29 other teams to grab from under their nose, the Phillies added three names to protect.

.

Mick Abel is the more notable name on the list. Drafted with the team’s first round pick in 2020, Abel has had a slow and methodical march through their minor league system. He’s shown oodles of stuff while on that march, but that stuff isn’t always going where it was supposed to be, which has led to struggles. This past year was probably the most disappointing year of his career as he struggled with his control and ability to keep runs of the board, leading to a 6.46 ERA in Lehigh Valley and a slew of doubt within the organization.

Jean Cabrera was on the other end, having a solid season between Clearwater (3.39 ERA in 77 innings over 14 starts) and Reading (4.85 ERA over six games, five of them starts). He struck out his fair share in Florida for the Threshers, striking out 29.0% of hitters he faced against walking only 8.0%. He has a chance to make a few starts for the Phillies this year so long as he isn’t moved in a deal this offseason.

Moises Chace is a big success story for the team. Acquired in what is shaping up to be a steal of a deal for Gregory Soto, Chace came to Reading and struck out a whopping 45.5% of hitters he faced over 19 23 innings in Baseballtown. The stuff he possesses backs up the numbers with multiple scouts raving about what he did with the Phillies organization after the trade. That move is starting to look pretty, pretty, pretty good for Dave Dombrowski.

These pitchers being put in the 40-man roster puts the team’s total at 39 headed into this weekend with the nontender deadline approaching.
