Matthew Boyd will start Game 4 for Chicago Cubs tonight at Wrigley Field: ‘We fight to the end’

Chicago Cubs lefty Matthew Boyd fully expects better results this time.

Boyd will start in Game 4 of the National League Division Series Thursday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field after failing to get through the first inning in Game 1. First pitch is scheduled for 8:08 p.m.

Column: First-inning flop leaves Matthew Boyd in good company in Chicago Cubs postseason history

“I know what I’m going to do when the ball is in my hand, and when that time comes (Thursday) I’ll be ready,” Boyd said after the Cubs’ 4-3 win in Wednesday’s Game 3.

“I know what I’m going to do. I’m going to compete and leave it all out there on the field. It takes all of us to go where we want to go, and I’ll do my role, and when that time comes, I’ll be ready to do exactly what I know.”

Milwaukee tagged Boyd for six runs (two earned) in Game 1 Saturday at American Family Field, ending his day after only two outs. A fielding error by second baseman Nico Hoerner compounded Boyd’s struggles. But the veteran didn’t look sharp pitching on short rest.

“You go out here and put yourself in the best position to be the best version of yourself,” Boyd said. “When you have an outing that doesn’t go the way you want, that isn’t a desirable one, you go through and say what can I do better?”

The Cubs face their third elimination game this postseason when they face Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta. A win would force a decisive Game 5 Saturday in Milwaukee with a spot in the NL Championship Series on the line.

“Our team, we’ve got our own identity, our own heartbeat, we fight to the end and we’re resilient,” Boyd said. “It showed (Wednesday) and it showed throughout the season and it showed throughout this clubhouse.”
