Chiefs need victory over Lions to get season back on track

Coming off an excellent offensive performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars that was ruined by multiple mistakes, the (2-3) Kansas City Chiefs host the (4-1) Detroit Lions on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for the Week 6 edition of “Sunday Night Football.” Kickoff is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. Arrowhead Time on NBC and Peacock — locally on KSHB/41.

A victory would bring Kansas City to 3-3, a record that two squads have recorded during Andy Reid’s 12-season tenure as the Chiefs’ head coach. Finishing the season 9-7, the 2014 team was the last to miss the postseason. Then in 2021, Kansas City took its 12-5 record into the playoffs, hammering the Pittsburgh Steelers 42-21 before beating the Buffalo Bills 42-36 in overtime by virtue of an unforgettable 13-second drive to close regulation. But that would be the end of 2021’s magic. In the AFC Championship, the Cincinnati Bengals collected a 27-24 overtime win over the Chiefs.

But should Kansas City lose Sunday’s matchup, the franchise’s history is not encouraging. Eight Chiefs teams have started their seasons 2-4. None of them made the postseason — and only the 1989 unit’s 8-7-1 record was above 0.500.
