The Red Sox have some questions to address in the offseason. One of those questions is what to do with the excess of outfielders the team has. Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony are all capable starters. The team could move Rafaela to the infield full-time, but then would face issues with finding spots for Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell.
Duran’s name popped up in many trade rumors earlier this season, and he may finally get dealt this summer. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer predicted the Red Sox would make this trade with the San Diego Padres that involves Duran:
- Red Sox receive: RHP Jeremiah Estrada, C Ethan Salas
- Padres receive: OF Jarren Duran, DH Masataka Yoshida
Yoshida has had some big moments, but has ultimately not lived up to the hype he had coming into MLB. He was a great power hitter in Japan, but those numbers have not quite carried over. Duran would solve a huge need in the Padres’ outfield, and the Padres were reportedly very interested in him at the trade deadline.
Trading Duran and Yoshida would solve the outfield logjam, while also freeing up some money. Salas is one of the best prospects in the Padres system as well. With the money saved from Yoshida’s contract, the Red Sox could ensure they re-sign Alex Bregman and maybe find an option to fill the DH role.
