The New Orleans Saints got their first victory on Sunday afternoon against a New York Giants team that felt great about themselves after Week 4. The black and gold played with energy and took advantage of the G-Men’s mistakes. That being said, that did not prevent a quite questionable call late in the fourth quarter.
Saints pass rusher Carl grandson was flagged for roughing the passer when he sacked Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart from his blindside. There’s only one problem. Granderson tackled him in the exact form that the defensive coaching staff teaches nowadays.

Granderson did not land his bodyweight on Dart. There was no contact with the head or neck area. He simply shoved him and let go, avoiding any contact with the QB’s lower half on his follow-through, too. It was a hard, clean hit, by the book.

Accordingly, Saints veteran pass rusher Cameron Jordan made his feelings crystal clear on the call. He was not happy with the flag in that scenario and believes those sort of calls limit defenders from simply doing their job. He makes plenty of fair points.
“We had an erroneous flag thrown at Carl Granderson’s sack, which is egregious on all levels. It needs to be talked about. Somebody needs to be discussed, explained even. Becuase I mean, when you get a sack, he did everything in his power to secure a big sack in the fourth quarter, final drive and it gets taken away.
It was ludicrous without explanation. As a defensive lineman, what else can we can do? As a defense, you’re telling us that we can’t do our jobs. So how do we do our jobs then? Please.” — Cam Jordan on roughing the passer call on Carl Granderson late in game vs. Giants via Matthew Paras
Jordan’s frustration was heartfelt. The call came once the game was basically decided, but what if it came during a tight game where the defense desperately needed a stop? Turning that sack, filled with momentum and energy, into a free first down and gain of fifteen yards could have been game-changing.
Regardless, we can see how much Jordan still cares even as his pro career probably comes to a close fairly soon. He knows how hard Granderson has worked to become the best defensive lineman on the Saints in recent seasons. You have to expect him to be passionate here.
At the very least, the Saints did get the win over New York. It will be interesting to see if the NFL addresses this call from the Week 5 matchup this week, though. I’m sure the Saints will make their point of view known with the league.
