On a night filled with high anticipation for the MLB community, the announcement of the Rookie of the Year awards stirred up plenty of conversation.
Orioles fans, who had high hopes for their standout outfielder Colton Cowser, found themselves a touch disheartened as Yankees’ starting pitcher Luis Gil edged out Cowser for the AL honor – but only by a hair’s breadth.
Gil garnered 15 first-place nods, while Cowser was right behind with 13. Yankees’ catcher Austin Wells rounded out the top three, albeit at a distance.
Colton Cowser’s season was nothing short of remarkable, leading all AL rookies with an impressive 4.0 fWAR, a figure bettered only by the Padres’ Jackson Merrill and the Cubs’ Shota Imanaga among all rookies.
His final slash line of .242/.321/.447 included 24 home runs and nine stolen bases, and he showed versatility and defensive prowess in both center and left fields.
Playing in a remarkable 153 games, Cowser showcased durability and consistency, emerging as a cornerstone in the Orioles’ lineup and solidifying his role in the team’s promising future.
Interestingly, while the spotlight initially seemed destined for top prospect Jackson Holliday, Cowser’s breakthrough performance has positioned him as a key player in the Orioles’ development narrative moving forward.
On the flip side, Luis Gil’s campaign was undeniably strong, featuring a 15-7 record over 151.2 innings, with a solid 3.50 ERA. His 171 strikeouts were the second best among rookie pitchers and led the American League, further highlighting his credentials.
However, Gil’s fWAR of 2.2 placed him ninth among rookies, as he lagged behind fellow AL rookies, including relievers Cade Smith and Mason Miller.
His 12.1% walk rate fell in the league’s bottom seventh percentile, paired with a 4.14 FIP, indicating areas for improvement despite his overall success.
In a nail-bitingly close race, Gil took the title by merely five points. Interestingly, both Gil and Cowser appeared on a limited number of ballots, with some voters leaving them off entirely.
Cowser, in particular, was conspicuously absent from three ballots, raising eyebrows given his status as the leading rookie hitter in the AL.
The near-miss for Cowser is undoubtedly a bittersweet reminder for Orioles fans.
Had he claimed the award, it would have marked the second consecutive year an Oriole took home the Rookie of the Year title, with Gunnar Henderson having won it in 2023.
The Orioles’ recent history of producing top-tier rookies, with Adley Rutschman finishing as a close runner-up in 2022, speaks volumes about their vibrant farm system and the bright future that lies ahead.
Despite the missed award, the consistent presence of Orioles rookies in the spotlight underscores a promising trajectory for the franchise.
