A New York Giants fan has sparked fury across the internet after she “cruelly” stole a gift meant for a young Chiefs fan last Sunday. The woman, dubbed “Giants Karen,” has since been identified, and the apology she issued after being dragged online isn’t enough for NFL fans to forgive her.
What Happened At This Giants Vs. Chiefs Game?
The moment was captured after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the New York Giants 22-9 during their game. As quarterback Patrick Mahomes walked toward the crowd in the stands, he took off his headband and handed it to a young fan wearing a Chiefs hat. The boy had barely grasped the gift when an adult woman snatched it out of his hands. The boy turns to the camera and says, “Yo, she just stole that from me!”
The video, which was posted on the @kansas.city.karen’s TikTok account, has led to an outpouring of outrage online.
People Are Furious
Many criticized a grown woman for “stealing” from a child.
“As a mother this would of been handled different,” a top comment read, while another wrote, “The fact grown adults keep doing this.”
Many pointed out that the woman wasn’t even a Chiefs fan, yet she took Mahomes’ band.
“Mahomes is making EYE CONTACT with the kid while handing it to him,” another pointed out. “That’s messed up.”
It didn’t take long for the “Karen” to identify herself online. Nina Miller posted two TikToks about the incident—the first one defending her actions and the second one backtracking.
The ‘Karen’ Responds To The Backlash
In her first clip addressing the incident, Miller (@michaelmiller_nina) starts, “I did not steal a headband from a little kid.”
She says that in the last 2 minutes of the game, she “allowed” many to come sit down or stand next to her. Miller says she paid for her seats, and the others standing around probably came from further back.
“I don’t know if that kid’s from the nosebleeds,” she says. Miller continued to defend her actions, saying that the parents should toughen up the kid more.
“It is what it is,” she says in the clip.
Needless to say, the clip only fueled the fans’ anger more. So much so that she made a follow-up clip issuing an apology for her behavior.
“I honestly thought Patrick Mahomes was giving me the headband,” she says in her apology video. Miller continues that she only felt horrible after she found out it was the boy’s 10-year-old birthday.
“To the young boy, I’m sorry I ruined your moment. You should have had your moment for your birthday,” Miller says. She then asks TikTok to help her put her in contact with the little boy so she can give him the band.
“I’m a human. I make mistakes; I’m not perfect. But I’m also a mom, also a Christian,” Miller says of the comments she’s been receiving. “I’m sorry to everyone, but I’m mostly sorry to you, Joey.”
What’s Up With ‘Karens’ At Sports Games?
This isn’t the first sports “Karen” to go viral this month after allegedly stealing something from a kid. Miller was dubbed the “new Phillies Karen” following the incident where a woman at a Phillies MLB game stole a home run ball from a child. The incident was such a scandal that the boy’s dad ended up on Good Morning America talking about the situation. He had picked up the ball to hand to his son, only to be berated by a woman who wanted the ball. The father ended up giving the ball to her just so she would stop.
In a statement to USA Today, he said, “Please don’t do anything to that lady. Leave it alone. You know, somebody knows her and can talk to her, that’s different. But God, I don’t want people breaking in their house and stuff like that. The internet already messed her up pretty good.’’
UPDATE:
Mindy Masters, Joey’s mother, told BroBible she took her son to the game for his birthday and that Mahomes is an idol of the now-10-year-old’s.
“I was recording this once in a lifetime moment and didn’t see the woman grab it from son until I went to film his reaction. He was heartbroken!” she shared.
She didn’t think they’d ever see the headband again until the video went viral.
“Joey was so happy to hear that she said she was going to give the headband back because that was all he wanted,” she said. “Joey definitely thinks it’s pretty cool that all these millions of people have watched, commented and are cheering on his side but I don’t think he really grasps the idea of how huge this really is.”
Masters says they reached out to the woman to give her their mailing address for the headband but that they have yet to hear back from her.
