While Dallas Cowboys fans might catch the legendary cheerleaders for a few hours on the field during a game, their day starts well before then.
Earlier this season, TODAY followed two Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders as they prepared for a Sunday night match.
The squad’s 11-hour game day starts with two hours of “full glam,” DCC Kelly Villares and Charly Barby told TODAY. Both Villares and Barby were featured on the popular Netflix docuseries “America’s Sweethearts,” which tracks the squad from auditions through the season’s end.
They shared a few of their makeup tricks. Barby said she’s learned to “use cream products before powder,” and Villares said she “always” uses a fan to set.
As for achieving their famously voluminous locks? “A lot of people ask how we get the DCC volume, and what I do is I use a roller,” Villares said.

Heading over to the stadium, Barby packed a suitcase with necessities like “a bunch of tights,” a pair of scissors, stain removing wipes and boot paint to touch up her white cowboy boots.
At 2, the team gathered for the bus to the stadium. “I feel like it’s the first time we see each other on game day,” Barby said. “I feel like everyone’s super excited.”
“Our marathon really started when we woke up,” Villares said. “We’re great at making it look effortless. I think that’s the magic behind what we do.”
Forty-five minutes later, TODAY and the DCC arrived at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, with four and a half hours to go before kickoff. The athletes unpacked in the locker room, hung up their uniforms, had a brief stretch and went into rehearsal at 3 p.m. local.
DCC director Kelli Finglass told TODAY the intention of the final on-field practice is to give the team “one final run-through to get that last dose of confidence and preparation.”

During the rehearsal, the cheerleaders performed their iconic dance to “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, which they do each game.
When asked how they keep their energy up during the long hours before putting it all on the field, Barby credited “adrenaline.”
“We’re just super excited to be here,” she continued.
“And we have each other,” Villares added.
Before the game started, the dancers did a gift exchange (a game day tradition) and sat down for a catered dinner.
Once uniforms went on, the DCC ran through some additional sideline dancers and painted their white boots, covering any scuff marks or stains.
Though kickoff for the Dallas Cowboys football team wasn’t for another hour, the DCC performed “Baby, I’m a Star” for fans outside the stadium.
Then, “fluff and puff” began.

“Fluff and puff is where we pretty much redo our hair and makeup,” Villares explained, laughing.
After their touchup, the cheerleaders gathered together and headed into the tunnel in anticipation of their “Thunderstruck” performance.
“You know, it never gets old,” Villares said of the feeling of standing beside her teammates ready to hit the field. “I have the nerves, but the best nerves. It’s the best feeling ever.”
“Let’s get Thunderstruck!” she said.
