While the Philadelphia Phillies have gone out and won back-to-back NL East titles, the New York Mets have become a laughingstock in Major League Baseball. Outside of their NLCS appearance last season, the Steve Cohen era in Queens has become an expensive, overhyped series of unfortunate events.
Few teams in MLB could go out, spend the money the Mets did and have nothing to show for it. Their own broadcast is even tired of watching the recurring circus act.
During the Mets’ Friday matchup against the Miami Marlins, the Mets had a series of misplays in the field, which led to the Marlins scoring six unanswered runs to retake the lead 6-2. The Mets’ TV broadcast had had enough of the mental errors costing them valuable games.
Mets’ have made headlines for all the wrong reasons during their tailspin
Mets’ play-by-play broadcaster Gary Cohen kicked the tires on the conversation.
“And the Mets’ lack of attention to detail which has cropped up repeatedly during this slow motion backwards march over the last three and a half months comes up to bite them again,” Cohen stated.
Mets’ color commentator Ron Darling followed up on their lack of focused play.
“I mean, you might take your whole travel ball squad off the field if something like that happened. Here’s a team that is fighting to get to October. What are you going to do in October with an inning like that?” Darling asked.
The Mets had the best record in baseball on June 12 at 45-24. Whether you attribute it to peaking too early or over performing, they came crashing back down to earth. They’ve gone 38-55 the rest of the regular season, the sixth-worst record in baseball during that span. They also had three separate seven-game losing streaks during this collapse. This persistent losing now has this supposed World Series contender missing out on the final Wild Card spot on the last day of the regular season.
Phillies fans are just sitting back and enjoying it all. The Phillies clinched the NL East back on Sept. 15 and clinched a first-round bye just nine games later. They took care of what they needed too and, above all else, are a good baseball team from the inside out.
The Phillies are building off of what they fell short on last year, and legitimately look like a World Series threat. Most importantly, the Mets aren’t even in the playoffs this time around.
